Process Water Program Overview

Including:

Cooling Tower Blowdown Reuse
Reverse Osmosis equipment (and any necessary chemical water treatment system, dictated by site water analysis) are used to desalt cooling tower blowdown with the clean water being used for cooling tower make-up and the R/O reject water discharged to sewer.

A site specific analysis, in particular a water chemistry analysis is necessary to determine the needed systems.

Once-Thru Cooling
Some facilities still use water for once thru cooling (usually for refrigeration systems). Replacing these systems by tying into the chilled water loop or by addition of an air cooled or cooling tower units can be cost effective.

A thermal analysis is performed for preliminary engineering purposes. An air cooled unit would have the heat rejection occur by an air cooled outdoor unit and would eliminate water use for this activity

A cooling tower system would reject the heat by water evaporation and reduce water use by this activity by a factor of 50-100:1.

High-Purity Water Reject Reuse
High-purity water systems are usually associated with laboratory facilities.

The reject water is usually slightly saltier than the water supply and is generally reusable for non-potable purposes (e.g.: toilet flushing, cooling tower make up, irrigation, etc.).

The reject water would be engineered to a non-potable user with piping, tankage, and controls being the system components. Typical water savings are 75-100%

Sterilizers
Water-use reduction retrofits are available from the manufacturer and are installed to reduce water use in hospital sterilizers.

More efficient water use is achieved in current system designs.

Total Wastewater Treatment and Reuse
The total or partial facility wastewater stream can be collected, treated, and reused for non-potable purposes.

Dual piping is necessary and usually is the factor which dictates economic viability.

The treatment system consists of biological treatment, media filtration, carbon filtration, and UV disinfection. These systems have been successfully used for over 20 years in water/wastewater restricted areas.
