Education/University
- Customer: A 10,000-student university located in Cambridge,
MA
Customer
Need
The university was spending over $1.7 million per year in water and sewer
charges. The over 200 million gallons it used each year made it one of
the largest users of water in the City of Cambridge. With a new sewage
treatment plant being constructed, saving water would not only mean saving
a substantial amount of money, but would also lessen the burden on the
citys infrastructure.
Aqualine
Solution
Aqualine completed an engineering study and determined that implementing
a domestic water program would be an effective way to save water while
at the same time upgrade current fixtures to state-of-the-art technologies.
Aqualine replaced over 1500 toilets with 1.6 gallon per flush models,
and all sink aerators and shower heads with low-flow devices. An article
on the water-savings program was featured in the student newspaper praising
the virtues of the program from an environmental and financial perspective.
Savings
- Dollars saved = $282,000 annually. Over a ten year period the university
will save over $3.5 million which will fall directly to their bottom
line.
- Gallons saved equates to 32 million annually. Over a ten year period,
over 321 million gallons will be saved.
Payback
Payback on the cost of installation for the campus is 1.8 years.
